This Week at Cooper's

Cooper’s has made a lot of new friends this week!  While the vacationers start to dwindle (the surrounding states have started school already), we are seeing some seniors from the neighboring states as well as more locals.  And not just from Jamestown, but Bemus Point and other surrounding communities.  Let’s face it, there aren’t enough people in Jamestown to really make downtown thrive.  We need to bring people in from around the county and from the Warren area.  Any ideas out there?

Speaking of school, the students start back up next week.  We’ve seen a lot of school teachers at the shop recently, taking a break from setting up their classrooms.  They’re ready to begin a new year.  We think that the students are, too.  We’ve seen a lot more of them as well.  Did you know that all students (high school and college, any school) get 10% off most everything at Cooper’s?  They just need to show their school ID.

The new dog park at the Chautauqua County Humane Society is almost done!  Sally took me to see it the other day and it looks like a real park – only with dogs!  There are beautiful plants and trees, benches, tires for the dogs to run through and there will be ramps and steps for dog training.  (There are actually dogs that don’t know how to go up and down steps – they’ve never seen them!)  A lot of the work was done by Krista Thorsell and many local businesses have donated a lot of the plants and other materials as well as labor.  These include: Brigiottas Farmland Produce and Garden Center; Four Seasons Nursery & Garden; Krist Hansen Nursery & Landscaping Service; Misty Ridge Landscaping; Roberts Nursery; Mikes Nursery; Chautauqua Brick; Zahm & Matson; Barmore Sellstrom Tire; Town of Chautauqua Highway Dept; Home Depot; Tri-James Services; Steve Carlson; and, Chautauqua County Master Gardeners.  There is an official unveiling on September 9.  And once the park is complete, we’ll have a display at the shop.

One of Sally’s pet projects is the “adoption board” at Cooper’s.  This includes a picture and description of every dog available for adoption at the Humane Society.  I pretty much stay out of this but I am truly amazed at the number of dogs that are adopted any given month.   We are certainly not the most populous county around, but we sure do love our dogs.  Even the ugliest ones get adopted! [I can say that as a really “tired looking”, but extremely affectionate (Sally won’t let me call it ugly), dog got adopted this past week.]

Cooper’s is the meeting place.  In addition to several groups that just get together to chat, we continue to have business meetings at the various tables.  A first this past Wednesday.  A local wedding photographer had some out of town perspective clients coming in so they met at Cooper’s to review her work.  While I didn’t mean to be nosey, her work looked very good.  I wonder if this was the same woman that took those engagement photos at the shop?

Cooper’s is also the “accidental recruiter.”  After I mentioned a ballroom dance instructor that stopped by during her job search, we received two requests for her information about a possible job.  I know that she has at least one interview next week.  Hey, whatever works in this economy!

OK, now to one of my pet peeves about Downtown Jamestown – where’s the signage?!  I’ve been on a mission to get signs downtown directing people to the shops, the hotels, arena and, of course, the restaurants, for like a year now.  Every town has directories conveniently placed along the main drag.  Maybe some of the local building owners will donate some window or exterior wall space to put up signs directing people around town.  (Heck, I’d even rent space if it had the Cooper’s logo on it!)  We get thousands of people going to arena, how about signs sending them to downtown eateries instead of heading into Lakewood to the national chains?

Hope to see you at Cooper’s soon!

So, what is Cooper’s? It’s quality soups, sandwiches piled high, original salads and fresh baked goods. It’s locally roasted coffee and hot and cold espresso drinks. It’s a great place to meet friends and family to chat over coffee and biscotti. It’s a relaxing place to meet with clients. It is your WiFi hot spot to read your email and check out your Facebook page. It’s a place to catch up on the latest news playing on our flat screen TV sets. It’s a showcase for local artists.
